Why Detail Jobs Come Back — and How to Stop It
Every detail shop owner knows the feeling: a customer calls two days after pickup because the glass is streaked or the back seat carpet is still dirty. The job took four hours. The fix takes twenty minutes and a lot of goodwill.
It's rarely skill — it's memory
Most comebacks aren't caused by a tech who can't do the work. They're caused by a step that lived in someone's head instead of on a list. When the wash bay is backed up and the day runs long, the steps that get skipped are the ones nobody wrote down.
A checklist the job can't skip
The fix is boring and it works: a checklist per service package, in the order your shop actually works, that the job literally cannot be completed without. Not a clipboard on the wall — a checklist on the phone in the tech's pocket, where a job can't be marked done until every required step is confirmed.
A second set of eyes before the keys go back
The last line of defense is a manager quality check. The tech does a final walkthrough, captures after photos, and signs. Then a manager reviews, approves by name, or sends it back with the exact areas to fix. Nothing reaches the customer until someone with authority has signed off.
When something does slip, make it teach
Rework is going to happen. The question is whether it happens twice. When a job is sent back for glass, the tech should automatically get the glass training — not a lecture, the actual how-to — so the same miss doesn't show up on next week's jobs. Track which areas fail most often across the team and you'll know exactly where your training time pays off.
